Reimagining Healing for Black Children & Families Through Play

OUR MISSION

At Playful Minds Therapy, we believe in the power of play as a radical act of healing. Our mission is to create an African-Centered ecosystem of mental health, empowering Black and Brown children to flourish through culturally affirming practices.

Through African-Centered Play Therapy™ (ACPT), we provide children and families with a space that affirms their experiences, honors their identities, and supports their emotional growth in a way that traditional therapy often overlooks.

  • Healing Rooted in Community

Traditional therapy often isolates healing to the individual. We do things differently. ACPT acknowledges that Black children’s healing is communal, which is why parents and families are essential partners in the therapeutic process.

    We provide:
ACPT-based interventions designed specifically for Black children
Family engagement & consultation to create lasting support
A culturally affirming approach that centers Black joy, identity, and emotional well-being

  • Founded by NaShey Ingram, LCSW-C, RPT-S, Playful Minds Therapy was born out of a need to bridge the gap between play therapy and the unique needs of Black children and their families.

Despite the growing recognition of play therapy, most approaches fail to consider the cultural realities of Black children, leaving gaps in emotional validation, identity development, and racial trauma acknowledgment.

PMT was created to change that narrative. Through African-Centered Play Therapy™, we challenge outdated models, ensure that Black children see themselves in their healing process, and equip families with the tools to nurture emotional wellness beyond the therapy room.

  • Cultural Affirmation – Black children deserve therapeutic spaces that affirm their identities and experiences.

Community-Centered Healing – Healing happens within relationships, not in isolation.

The Power of Play – Play is a universal language for children to process emotions and experiences.

Accessibility & Impact – We work to ensure more families and therapists can access training, resources, and care that truly reflects them.

  • Supporting Families – Providing therapy and consultation for families navigating emotional challenges.

Training Clinicians – Offering community supervision, workshops, and training in African-Centered Play Therapy™.

Collaborations & Outreach – Partnering with schools, therapists, and organizations to expand culturally affirming mental health support.
